Ysgol Solfach – Breaking News!

From Ysgol Solfach Governors – Breaking News!
Pupils, staff and governors of Ysgol Solfach are delighted to report that following Estyn’s recent visit the school has been taken out of the ‘Special Measures’ category, which is a testament to the hard work and commitment of all involved. The school was praised for the approach it had taken during a challenging year and examples of significant progress in several areas were highlighted.
The school will continue to improve on its strengths and focus on development to provide an excellent education and experience for all pupils, now and in the future. The positive progress to date and recognition of this by Estyn has been a big boost for all involved. It is unusual for a school to be taken out of special measures within four terms and this reflects the effort that everybody has put in. Special thanks to pupils, staff, governors, community and key personnel from the local authority whose support throughout the years has had an incredible impact.

DRAMA AWARDS

PEMBROKESHIRE DRAMA ASSOCIATION AWARDS 2015 – 16 RESULTS
Held at The Vine Inn, Johnston, on Thursday 10th March
Best supporting Actor: Sam Bramley for Shade in YSADS Superheroes
Best Actress: Evie Young for Ramona in YSADS Superheroes
Best Supporting Actress: Jane Wilde for Won Tun in SADS Aladdin
Best Newcomer: YSADS – the whole group for Secret Spies and Superheroes
Best Presentation: SADS Aladdin, presented to Becky Wright
The Adjudicator’s remarks:
SUPERHEROES -The cast in this piece worked and interacted well with each other. A simple but effective set. There may be many Superhero films but Superheroes the play is a truly interesting concept, relying on a hard working cast, which was clear throughout.
WE ARE EXPECTING YOU, MR SMIRK – For such a young cast the characterisation throughout was fantastic and the staging was strong and the performance never fell flat. This was a fun-filled, exciting, enjoyable and silly performance. A great show by such a young cast. I am looking forward to seeing more of them in the future.
ALADDIN – What a welcoming cast with older members supporting younger ones. Songs were sung wonderfully by all of the cast throughout. The use of “in jokes” gave the whole piece a strong community feel. The scenery was well made and the costumes were very authentic.

NETBALL TEAM

NETBALL TEAM
On Saturday 23rd April St Davids U15 Netball Team went to Bangor University to represent West Wales in the National Clubs Finals, having earned their place in the finals by finishing runners up in the regional final the weekend before. It was a brilliant experience for the local girls and they showed a massive improvement in their play as the day went on. The pool games in the morning were tough but in the afternoon the girls dug deep and made it to the Plate Semi Final.
They lost this game to a strong Deeside team. To say we are proud of this group of girls (two of whom live in Solva) is an understatement! Not only are they hugely talented but they are a pleasure to be around. Well done to you all!

New Solva Walk

NEW SOLVA WALK
PCNPA, in conjunction with the landowner, is pleased to announce the new Solva “Prendergast” walk open. Under the guidance of Ian Meopham, PCNPA’s North West Ranger, volunteers have dug out of the hillside a fabulous new walk, which circumnavigates the north hill along Prendergast and offers walkers exercise and stunning views across the valley. With two access points in Prendergast the path climbs the hill and joins the existing “Quick” route back either to Prendergast or along towards the harbour.
Congratulations to everyone involved. Great job!

SOLVA WI

April’s meeting started earlier than usual with a ‘pot luck’ lunch, which was
enjoyed by everyone. As a tribute to the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations many members wore crowns and everything had a red, white and blue theme.
Our visiting speaker, Jane Bayliss, talked about Japanese costume and culture. She brought a wonderful selection of kimonos and obis, which we were encouraged to try on. Everyone was amazed by both the detailed workmanship in these garments, and their cost!
Our next meeting will be on Thursday 12th May and our guest speaker, Sheena Crossley, will talk about ‘Gardens of Wales’.
The Jean Platt trophy will also be presented to the WI member who has produced the best flower arrangement.
New members are very welcome
