Solva WI

April’s meeting started earlier than usual with a ‘Pot Luck’ buffet lunch supplied by our members and committee. This was followed by the usual business section and then … after more tea and cakes etc we settled down to watch and listen to our speaker Judy Coggins. Judy spent many years working for the Chatsworth estate, during which time she became part of the ‘Chatsworth family’ and was able to give us an insight into the personalities and activities of
the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and their families. This in itself was captivating as the Duchess, Deborah, was one of the infamous Mitford sisters – a very colourful, interesting group.
We were given an illuminating potted history of Chatsworth House and gardens illustrated by relevant pictures. Judy also included amusing tales of incidents during her guided tours and of other funny events. With her incredible recall for historical dates and names – all without notes – we were treated to a fascinating talk, which was a glimpse of ‘life below stairs’.
Our next meeting will be on May 11 and as usual any new/potential members are welcome. The speaker will be Sheena Crossley who will share her expertise on Victorian gardens.
