Parc y Capel Fete Update

Parc y Capel Fete – The weather kept dry throughout the day and the attendance of this popular event was very good. Carol Ann Jones opened the proceedings with an entertaining anecdote about a previous fete opening and a bottle of gin, before heading straight for the bottle stall, which did a roaring trade and was soon depleted. People were encouraged to spend their money at a variety of stalls offering soft toys, a grand raffle, candy floss, bric-a-brac, plants, books, clay modelling, a sunflower competition (to be judged at the Edge Festival), hot food, teas and cake served from the Memorial Hall and people telling stories to each other dressed as bugs! A treat for all, especially the Goodwick Brass band, and thanks to the organisers for putting on a great show.

Village of the Year 2017?

Solva Community Council has applied for the Channel 4 Village of the Year 2017 competition. SCC’s application highlighted the village’s demographics and geographic location, its attributes and uniqueness. It also highlighted why
residents and visitors love the village, and how proud the local residents are of their school, their heritage, their churches, their local businesses, Solva Care (one of the first local care facilities in the UK) and their social and sporting organisations and events.
The Channel 4 Village of the Year programme will be presented by actress Penelope Keith who has visited scores of rural communities in her Hidden Villages series. Penelope will preside over heats, semi-finals and final, with a panel of expert judges deciding which villages will progress through the rounds before revealing their winner, based on the following criteria: Appearance; History and Heritage; Village Events; Activities; and Visitor Experience.
They will award their chosen village the accolade “Village of the Year” and £10,000 to be used for a worthwhile community project. Latest news is that the short list process has begun and SCC hopes to hear by 15 June whether Solva has been successful.

Solva WI

The business of May’s meeting included voting on the resolutions for the National AGM next year. The arrangements and rehearsals for the coming celebrations for Solva WI’s Centenary are well in hand. We are grateful to the Big Lottery Fund who have granted us financial help towards the events which include an Exhibition and Evening
of Entertainment (tickets available now) and a ‘Birthday’ Tea Party. As Solva & Mathry are celebrating 100 years both WIs are dressing the windows at WI House in Haverfordwest.
Sheena Crossley, one of our favourite speakers gave us a humorous and informative illustrated talk on Victorian Gardens.
The subject for the Jean Platt trophy was to make a celebration centenary card. The well-deserved winner was Mary Haughton.
Our meeting on Thursday 8th June is to Rhoslanog Garden followed by tea at Siop Fach Tearoom, Mathry. Members to meet at the Hall at 1.20 pm.
