The Grand opening of the Pwll Melyn Mosaic Steps

Only seven months since starting, and the Pwll Melyn Mosaic steps are finished and looking
resplendent with lovely art work, new slabs and attractive railings. For our grand opening,
Councillor Phil Baker cut the ribbon and lots of people came to the Hall to celebrate, including Cllr. Mark Carter and SCC Chair Josh Phillips. This has been a successful community art project, and ideas are already pouring in for what we might do next. Sue, Penny and Maddie would like thank all who took part and supported the Project. Following the success of the “Steps Project” further classes and projects are planned for an October start.
So, Watch this space!

Gone fishing ….. again!

Willie’s bench is now installed on the quay near Willie’s Shed, both commemorating the life and times of the Solva born fisherman – William Phillips, probably better known as Willie Bach or Will the Fish – who spent his whole life (1934-2018) working in Solva. His last boat, The Vital Spark, was much photographed and painted and will be as well remembered as his blue, three-wheeled Robin Reliant bearing the Will the Fish logo. The seafood business that he and his wife Jan established is now under a new name, Mrs Will the Fish. Local crab and lobster – caught by a new generation of Solva fishermen: Jono Voyce and Kevin Dufton – can be bought daily (9 am – 6 pm), freshly dressed from Parc Benny in Upper Solva. Please contact Jan on 01437 721571 / email mrswillthefish@gmail.com.

Solva WI

The main items of business at our meeting on Thursday 10 May were followed by discussion to enable members to decide which way to vote for the resolution ”Mental Health Matters” – the only resolution to be voted on at the NFWI Annual meeting which is to held in Cardiff on Wednesday 6 June.
Members had attended and enjoyed various events including the County Round at Crundale, Dewisland Spring Group meeting at Camrose and the Spring Council meeting at the Pavilion on the County Show ground where Solva won a cut glass bowl for the best calendar (clarity, layout and the varied subjects and themes of our Speakers). Our thanks were recorded to Mary Haughton who designs and arranges the programme.
There were a few arrangements then made for various outings including a visit to the Penrallt Garden Centre and a walk, the “Year of the Sea” celebration hosted by Croesgoch WI, the Strawberry Soiree & Quiz at Mathry and the annual Car Treasure Hunt. Plenty more to come in the next 2 months!
The speaker was the ever popular Sheena Crossley with an illustrated and ever-humorous talk on “Gardening by the Sea”.
Our next meeting on Thursday 14 June will start off with a short business meeting in the Hall at 2 pm, after which we will visit the “DaisyBus Garden”.
